Family Center in Zalin, North and East Syria, holds celebration for children on St. Barbara’s Day
ZALIN, Syria — In a heartwarming gesture to bring joy to children, the Syriac Women’s Union (SWU) in Zalin (Qamishli), North and East Syria, collaborated with the Family Center operated by the Syriac Cross Organization for Relief and Development to organize a special celebration on St. Barbara’s Day. The event, attended by children from the center and Zalka Kindergarten, along with their families, aimed to spread smiles and festive cheer.
SWU official Georgette Barsoum shared insights into the celebration’s preparation. Teachers and staff from the kindergartens arranged the event, complete with decorations and delightful treats. Barsoum highlighted the significance of children donning costumes and shared the inspiring story of Saint Barbara’s unwavering commitment to the Christian faith.
Expressing her joy in witnessing the children’s happiness during the celebration, Barsoum emphasized the positive impact of such events on the community.
Maika Gourieh, Director of Zalka Kindergarten, provided additional details about the festivities. Traditional cooked wheat, symbolizing the holiday, was prepared for the occasion, as St. Barbara fled and hid among the wheat. Children dressed in festive attire, and the celebration featured lively dances, songs, and the distribution of food and gifts.
Valentina Hanna, a teacher at Zalka Kindergarten, highlighted the educational aspect of the celebration. Teachers engaged children with songs and dances related to the occasion, fostering a spirit of joy and learning. She extended gratitude to the Suroyo Media Foundation and all involved in orchestrating the memorable celebration.
