Human rights organizations in North and East Syria condemn ongoing Turkish attacks, call for immediate protection of civilians

NORTH AND EAST SYRIA — North and East Syria continues to be targeted in a series of relentless attacks orchestrated by Turkish forces, utilizing drones and warplanes to target populated areas and vital civilian infrastructure.

In response to this alarming situation, 69 human rights and humanitarian organizations, including the Syriac Cross Organization for Relief and Development, have jointly issued a statement. The collective plea emphasized the urgent need for measures to safeguard civilians, coupled with a staunch rejection of destabilization efforts that undermine the ongoing fight against the Islamic State (ISIS).

The statement, echoing a call to action, implores the UN Security Council, the EU, and the US to intervene promptly. Their primary objectives include preventing civilian casualties, upholding basic rights, and averting further violations of international law.

Highlighting the detrimental impact of Turkish attacks on the stability of North and East Syria, the statement warns of the potential for another humanitarian tragedy if these assaults persist. The organizations unequivocally condemn the targeting of populated areas, humanitarian workers, and vital facilities. They stress that such continuous attacks resulting in the loss of civilian lives constitute a blatant violation of fundamental principles of international law.

The joint statement serves as a collective call to all parties involved in the Syrian conflict, urging them to adhere to international law, cease attacks on civilians, and respect the integrity of vital infrastructure.
