Iraqi MP denounces Turkish bases as illegal occupation, urges government action

BAGHDAD — In condemnation of the Turkish military presence in Iraq, Iraqi MP Ahmed al-Mousawi, representing the Sadikon Bloc, asserted the illegality of dozens of Turkish bases within the country, categorizing them as an “occupation”.

Al-Mousawi emphasized that the Turkish military’s presence in Iraq violates the country’s sovereignty, deeming it a direct threat to Iraq and its national security. He pointed to a parliamentary decision targeting the removal of foreign forces, including Turkish troops, considering them an occupying force.

Calling upon the Iraqi government to act within the framework of established laws and regulations, Al-Mousawi urged decisive measures to expel Turkey from Iraq.

A comprehensive October 2023 report by human rights organization Community Peacemaker Teams (CPT) catalogued the toll of Turkish military operations in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) since August 2015. The report disclosed a grim count of over 150 casualties and 288 injuries resulting from Turkish military attacks, further fueling concerns about the consequences of the Turkish military presence in the region.
