New Social Contract in North and East Syria safeguards rights through Confederal Democratic Framework, says Mariana Issa
NORTH AND EAST SYRIA — Officials and representatives from the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) component in North and East, actively involved in crafting the Social Contract of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), emphasized that the newly ratified document prioritizes the protection of the rights of all components within the region. Envisioned within a confederal democratic project, the Social Contract was officially adopted by the People’s Democratic Council of North and East Syria on 12 December.
Mariana Issa, Co-chair of the Progressive Syriac Youth Union and a member of the Legislative Council in Gozarto (Jazira) Region, stated that the Social Contract’s foundation lies in a confederal democratic model. This model advocates for the autonomy of each province within a democratic framework, structured from the grassroots commune level to the apex of democratic peoples’ councils.
Issa highlighted that the Social Contract incorporates fundamental principles designed to safeguard the rights of all components. Notably, it designates Syriac, Arabic, and Kurdish as official languages. This linguistic inclusivity is crucial for the diverse components of the region. Furthermore, the Social Contract underscores the imperative of respecting the cultural, religious, and belief-related freedoms of various components, including Turkmen, Chechens, and Circassians.
Emphasizing the comprehensive protection provided by the Social Contract, Issa asserted that it guarantees individual freedom across the regions of North and East Syria. The document stands as a testament to the commitment of the Autonomous Administration to foster inclusivity and uphold the diversity of the region.
