Japan allocates $7 million to UNICEF for vital aid to Syrian children affected by earthquake and conflict

DARAMSUQ — Japan has contributed $7 million to the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) to support children and families grappling with the aftermath of earthquakes and conflict in Syria. This generous contribution aims to provide essential services, including clean water, proper sanitation, hygiene kits, and educational support to the affected areas.

Hirofumi Miyake, the Japanese Charge d’Affaires and Special Coordinator for Syria, emphasized Japan’s unwavering commitment to assisting children impacted by the dual challenges of conflict and earthquakes in Syria. The primary focus remains on securing the fundamental needs necessary for the well-being of these children and their families.

UNICEF, in collaboration with Japan, is actively engaged in the rehabilitation of water facilities and sewage networks that suffered damage during the earthquakes in February. This partnership underscores Japan’s dedication to addressing critical infrastructure issues to ensure access to clean water and sanitation.

Furthermore, UNICEF highlighted its ongoing efforts in the rehabilitation of schools and temporary learning spaces. The organization is also committed to providing non-formal education opportunities for out-of-school children and those at risk of dropping out. The combined efforts seek to create a supportive environment for the education and well-being of Syrian children affected by these challenging circumstances.
