Syriac Union Party official Gabriel Shamoun criticizes international inaction on Turkish attacks on North and East Syria

NORTH AND EAST SYRIA — In a New Year’s message, Gabriel Shamoun, a member of the Executive Body of the Syriac Union Party (SUP) in Syria, extended his heartfelt congratulations to the Syrian people, expressing a hope for the restoration of security and stability across the entirety of Syria.

In comments to our newsdesk, Shamoun conveyed his wish for international powers to foster a comprehensive political solution that encompasses all Syrians, transcending ethnic divisions and safeguarding the rights of every citizen.

However, Shamoun did not shy away from condemning the stark international silence surrounding the Turkish attacks on North and East Syria. He deemed this inaction as indicative of shared interests between the international community and the Turkish government, often to the detriment of the region’s peoples.

Emphasizing the underlying dynamics, Shamoun pointed out the alignment of interests between Russia and Turkish over the occupation of northern Syria within the Astana Agreement, as well as shared interests with the fellow NATO member, the US.

In a call to action, Shamoun urged these international powers to reevaluate their policies regarding North and East Syria. He emphasized the significance of acknowledging the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria’s (AANES) experience in the region, particularly in the context of the recently approved New Social Contract and the enactment of laws aimed at serving citizens and fostering democracy across Syria.
