USUP President Ibrahim Mrad: Preservation of true identity of Lebanon requires preservation of free Christian existence

BEIRUT — Ibrahim Mrad, President of the Universal Syriac Union Party (USUP) in Lebanon, highlighted concerns over the increasing influence of Iranian-backed Hezbollah on decision-making centers and central authority in the country during a recent interview with Radio Free Lebanon.

Mrad expressed his reservations about appointing a new national president who might align with the so-called “Axis of Resistance” and Hezbollah, stating that, in his view, the current vacancy of the Lebanese presidency is preferable under such circumstances.

Addressing the imperative to safeguard the Syriac identity and language, Mrad emphasized their role in preserving the essence of free Christian existence, asserting it as the genuine identity of Lebanon and an integral part of Christian history.

Rejecting the term “Arab Christians” circulating in Lebanon, Mrad firmly asserted that the Christians of the East identify as Syriacs (Arameans–Assyrians–Chaldeans) with a distinctive cultural and historical identity.

Mrad said there are ongoing efforts to educate the Lebanese populace on the authentic Lebanese identity and nationalism. He highlighted collaborative endeavors with several political parties, including the Lebanese Forces Party, to reinforce awareness and understanding of the unique Syriac heritage within Lebanon.
