Imprisoned human rights activist Narges Mohammadi announces hunger strike amidst ongoing executions in Iran’s Evin Prison

TEHRAN — In Tehran, detained human rights activist Narges Mohammadi announced a hunger strike following the execution of a participant in the “Women, Life, Freedom” protests. Mohammadi revealed that 61 political prisoners in Evin Prison are joining the hunger strike to protest against the Iranian authorities’ ongoing executions.

“The imprisoned women are determined to honor the memory of those who have been executed and to spare the lives of the numerous individuals awaiting execution in the prisons of the Islamic Republic,” Mohammadi affirmed.

The recent executions included a 23-year-old Iranian citizen who had been arrested during the protests. Despite his death sentence being invalidated in the first branch of the Supreme Court, the execution proceeded, prompting the resolute response from Mohammadi and other political prisoners.

Mohammadi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023.
