Syriac–Assyrian composer Nouri Iskandar honored with musical tribute in Daramsuq on 40th day after his passing

DARAMSUQ — Marking the 40th day since the passing of renowned Syriac composer Nori Iskandar, a stirring musical commemoration was held in Daramsuq (Damascus), celebrating his enduring legacy through a showcase of his most significant works.

Organized by the Syrian Opera House in Daramsuq, the event featured performances by the esteemed Syrian National Symphony Orchestra, the Choir of the Higher Institute of Music, and a host of Syrian choirs and musical ensembles.

The evening unfolded with symphonic renditions of two of Iskandar’s masterpieces, followed by a captivating performance by Syriac artist Lamitta Ishua, who eloquently interpreted Iskandar’s compositions, steeped in the rich traditions of Syriac melodies.

In a solemn tribute, the Maestro of the Syrian National Symphony Orchestra delivered a heartfelt address, underscoring the invaluable contribution of Iskandar’s meticulous documentation efforts in preserving the Syriac musical heritage, especially in an era dominated by electronic influences and globalization.

Highlighting Iskandar’s profound artistic vision, the maestro emphasized his remarkable ability to weave together a tapestry of melodies, drawing from a diverse array of ideas, cultures, and genres that encapsulate the essence of Syrian civilization.

Furthermore, the Maestro lauded Iskandar’s pioneering experiments in tonality and sound production, which have left an indelible mark on the musical landscape, enriching the repertoire with innovative approaches to sonic expression.
