Joint march of Syriac, Arab, and Kurdish communities in Merdo (Mardin), Turkey

MERDO, Turkey — In Merdo (Mardin), Turkey, participants of the Great Freedom March reaffirmed their unwavering solidarity with the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) and Arab communities, advocating for the release of all detainees and the protection of the rights of every ethnic group in Turkey.

Commencing on 1 February from the cities of Van and Kars, the march has served as a poignant demonstration of unity and advocacy, drawing attention to pressing social and political issues affecting marginalized communities.

Arriving in Merdo, in the historic Tur Abdin region, the marchers embarked on a pivotal leg of their journey, engaging with local Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) and Arab residents to underscore their shared commitment to justice and equality.

A significant highlight of their visit was an encounter at the revered Dayro d-Zafaran (Deir Zafaran) Monastery, a cornerstone of the Syriac Orthodox tradition located just 3 km southeast of Merdo. Welcomed by Mor Philoxenos Saliba Özmen, the march participants received a profound insight into the monastery’s rich history and its enduring significance within the region’s cultural and religious landscape.

Continuing their outreach efforts, the marchers connected with the Arab Association, where they were received by Sakina Demir, the mother of Seifi Demir, tragically killed by authorities during a security curfew. Mrs. Demir emphasized the transformative power of grassroots movements in effecting meaningful change, underscoring the importance of collective action in advocating for justice and accountability.

Aladdin Turan, Executive Director of the Arab Association, affirmed their unwavering support for the march and its noble objectives, further bolstering the momentum of solidarity and advocacy among diverse communities.
