Olaf Taw Association in Hasakah, North and East Syria, promotes Syriac language ahead of International Mother Language Day
HASAKAH, Syria — As the world prepares to celebrate International Mother Language Day, Sophia Yousef, an official of the Olaf Taw Association for Syriac Language in Hasakah, North and East Syria, emphasized the pivotal role of language in defining a people’s identity and preserving their heritage.
“What distinguishes peoples is their language, customs, and heritage,” said Yousef. “Language expresses the originality and identity of peoples, including the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people, who are known for their indigenous and ancient and language.”
Highlighting the importance of teaching Syriac to children, Yousef underscored the significance of language preservation in safeguarding Syriac history and culture for future generations.
The Olaf Taw Association is actively engaged in organizing various activities and events across Hasakah, Zalin (Qamishli), Dayrik (Derik), and Qabre Hewore (Qahtaniyah) aimed at promoting and strengthening the Syriac language.
Yousef urged the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) community to recognize the vital role of their language, advocating for its dissemination and continued development in collaboration with language associations like the Olaf Taw Association.
