Beth Nahrain Women’s Union applauds Syriac woman’s candidacy for mayor of Azakh, Turkey

AZAKH, Turkey — The candidacy of Talita Bazu in the upcoming Turkish municipal elections on 31 March has garnered praise from the Beth Nahrain Women’s Union (Huyodo d’Neshe d’Bethnahrin, HNB), which views it as a positive and pivotal development for the rights of Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) women and the broader Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) community.

The HNB stated highlighted the historical contributions of Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) women, noting their resilience and leadership roles in rebuilding families and communities following the genocide committed against them 1915. It underscores how Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) women have been at the forefront of shaping democratic life and assuming political responsibilities.

Bazu’s independent candidacy for the mayorship Azakh, also known as Sharnakh, carries particular significance, especially given the area’s history and the memory of former mayor Shukri Tutush, whose tragic death occurred three decades ago.

The HNB emphasized the importance of protecting the achievements of the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) women’s struggle in the historic region of Tur Abdin in what is now southern Turkey, and across Beth Nahrin (Mesopotamia). They extend their congratulations to Talita Bazu, wishing her success in her electoral endeavors.
