Syriac Maronite Patriarch al-Rai urges swift presidential election to avert further crisis in Lebanon
BETH KERKE, Lebanon — Addressing congregants during Sunday Mass at the Patriarchal Residence in Beth Kerke (Bkerke), Lebanon, Syriac Maronite Patriarch Bechara Boutros al-Rai lamented the erosion of constitutional principles and the deterioration of coexistence, unity, and diversity, which have precipitated Lebanon’s descent into crisis.
He reiterated that the protracted presidential vacuum has laid bare the intentions of obstructionists, resulting in the collapse of state institutions and widespread disorder, allowing a select few to wield disproportionate influence while disregarding Lebanon’s National Charter and its foundational principle of unity in diversity.
The Patriarch warned that the persistence of this destructive trajectory imperils national unity, jeopardizes societal safety, and undermines the dignity of the Lebanese people.
Furthermore, Patriarch al-Rai underscored the constitutional imperative of promptly electing a president, holding officials accountable for perpetuating Lebanon’s fragmentation and decay.
Calling for immediate action, the Patriarch urged the election of a president who would staunchly defend Lebanon’s sovereignty and safeguard the interests of its populace, thwarting any internal or external machinations that threaten the nation’s stability and prosperity.
