Ancient Roman church unearthed beneath foundation of Three Moons Church in Dibbeen, Jordan
DIBBEEN, Jordan — Archaeologists conducting excavations for the construction of the Orthodox Center, encompassing the Greek Orthodox Church of the Three Moons in Dinbeen, Jordan, made a remarkable discovery — a well-preserved Roman church dating back to the 4th century.
Beneath the intended site for the new church, the 17-century-old Roman structure was unearthed, halting construction as experts delved into the significance of the find.
Upon closer inspection, it became evident that the newly discovered church held historical significance, with its origins tracing back to antiquity.
In a poignant tribute to the past, a mosaic recovered from the ancient church’s floor was carefully relocated and installed in the flooring of the new church, encased beneath protective glass.
Standing in the same spot where worshippers congregated centuries ago, the bishop delivered a sermon, highlighting the enduring legacy of faith in the region, dating back to the 4th century. Gathered believers joined in prayer, honoring the memory of those who once walked the hallowed halls of the ancient Roman church.
