Bethnahrin Women’s Union marks 23rd anniversary with call for empowerment and equality

BETH NAHRIN — In a statement commemorating its 23rd anniversary, the Bethnahrin Women’s Union (Huyodo d’Neshe d’Bethnahrin, HNB) heralded its historic mission in championing the rights and empowerment of Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) women, embodying a legacy of resilience and determination.

The HNB’s statement began by highlighting the rich heritage of Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) women, who historically held esteemed positions of leadership, only to see their status diminish under successive regimes, relegating them to subordinate roles under male authority.

Acknowledging the profound challenges faced by Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) women throughout history, including the erosion of their identity and autonomy amidst genocide and displacement, the statement underscored a pivotal turning point initiated by Mikhail Naim Hadodo, head of the Bethnahrin National Council (Mawtbo Umthoyo D’Bethnahrin, MUB).

Under his visionary leadership, the establishment of the HNB brought a new era of empowerment, with women assuming prominent roles across political, media, economic, and social spheres, both locally and globally.

The HNB’s tireless efforts culminated in the formation of women’s institutions across Europe, Syria, Tur Abdin, and Iraq, facilitating women’s participation in various capacities and advocating for justice and equality.

Emphasizing the HNB’s commitment to empowerment and equality, the statement highlighted the establishment of the Bethnahrin Women’s Protection Forces (Ḥaylawotho d’Sutoro d’Neshe d’Beth Nahrin, HSNB), wherein Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) women courageously took up arms to defend their rights and communities.

In closing, the statement affirmed the HNB’s unwavering dedication to strengthening the resolve of women and young women, positioning them as formidable advocates for their people on the world stage, while nurturing future generations imbued with principles of equality and democracy.
