Sarkozy calls on Macron to recognize Sayfo Genocide at Paris event
PARIS — Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy called on current President Emmanuel Macron to recognize the 1915 Sayfo Genocide committed against the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people by the Ottoman Empire, reported Suroyo TV.
Sarkozy’s remarks were made during the annual evening organized by the Association of Assyrian-Chaldeans in France, held at the Intercontinental Hotel in Paris, France.
The evening focused on the Sayfo Genocide and was attended by numerous prominent personalities, MPs, journalists, and government officials, including Co-Chair of the European Syriac Union (ESU) H. Fehmi Vergili, Syriac MP in the Turkish Parliament George Aslan, Syriac MP in the European Parliament Ilhan Basso, Sayfo Center official Sabri Atman, and Church representatives.
During the event, Vergili met with French MPs to discuss the recognition of the Sayfo Genocide and the situation of the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people in Beth Nahrin (Mesopotamia).
Throughout the speeches, officials, particularly former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, pledged to raise the issue of Sayfo with French President Emmanuel Macron and his government.
