Iran executed 834 protesters in 2023, according to human rights groups

TEHRAN — Iranian authorities executed 834 individuals throughout 2023 in a bid to intimidate protesters, as revealed by a joint report from the Norway-based Iran Human Rights (IHR) and the Paris-based Together Against the Death Penalty (ECPM).

The report highlights a significant surge in death sentences carried out via hanging, marking a 43% increase compared to the previous year.

Among those executed, nine individuals faced the death penalty for their alleged involvement in attacks on security forces — an increase from two in 2022, with six executions occurring in 2023 and one recorded thus far in 2024.

Of particular concern, the report underscores the execution of at least 176 individuals from the Baluch minority and 22 women, representing the highest toll in a decade.
