Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian delegation urges Iraqi President to safeguard minority rights amidst Federal Supreme Court ruling

BAGHDAD — A delegation representing the Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian people met with Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid at the Al-Salam Palace in Baghdad to discuss their concerns over the Federal Supreme Court’s decision to nullify their parliamentary representation rights in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI).

Led by prominent figures such as Yaqoub Korkis of the Assyrian Democratic Movement and Romeo Hakkari of the Bet-Nahrain Democratic Party, the delegation emphasized the critical importance of safeguarding minority representation in the face of the court’s ruling. Galita Shaba of the Abnaa al-Nahrain Party and Joseph Sliwa of the Bethnahrin Patriotic Union were also part of the delegation, alongside Faryal Shlimon and Rommel Esho from the Assyrian Patriotic Party.

The delegation appealed to President Rashid, seeking his support in rectifying the Federal Supreme Court’s decision, which they argued infringed upon their constitutional rights. They stressed the significance of preserving their representation in the legislative authority, particularly in light of recent developments.

President Rashid commended the historical contributions of the Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian community in combating terrorism and assured the delegation of his understanding of their grievances. He pledged to uphold their rights in accordance with the constitution, signaling a commitment to address their concerns and protect their representation in Iraq’s political landscape.
