Syriac Union Party calls for upholding Lebanon’s sovereignty in meeting with Armenian Hunchak Party
BEIRUT — A delegation from the Universal Syriac Union Party (USUP), led by USUP President Ibrahim Mrad, alongside Secretary of Internal Affairs Joseph Hajjar and Political Bureau Member Georges Gerbaka, met with representatives of the Social Democratic Armenian Hunchak Party. Hosted by Executive Committee Chairman Vanek Daxyan, the meeting included committee members Mihran Shahianyan and Lutvik Gudalazian, as well as party International Central Committee member Alex Koshkarian.
Central to the discussions was the historical camaraderie between the Armenian and Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) communities, emphasizing the enduring alliance between their respective parties. Delving into Lebanese and regional affairs, the attendees addressed the ongoing conflict in the southern region and its existential threat to the nation.
Highlighting the crisis of the central state’s governance, particularly in contexts mirroring Lebanon’s religious and cultural diversity, Mrad emphasized that enforcing international resolutions, notably UN Security Council Resolution 1559, and implementing a federal system were essential steps toward fostering genuine coexistence, fulfilling collective aspirations, and restoring Lebanon’s prosperity.
Concluding on a somber note, the participants reflected on the upcoming anniversary of the Armenian and Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) peoples’ tragic genocide, which the USUP intends to commemorate on 20 April this year, honoring the memory of Eastern Christians affected by the atrocities.
