European Syriac Union supports Peoples’ Equality and Democratic Party in upcoming Turkish elections

Struggle of the peoples of Beth Nahrin (Mesopotamia) and Anatolia for autonomous governance will surely succeed one day, and the mentality of war, occupation and oppression will end

BRUSSELS / ANKARA — The European Syriac Union (ESU) supports the Peoples’ Equality and Democratic Party (Halkların Eşitlik ve Demokrasi Partisi, DEM Party) in March 31 Turkish elections, the Firatê News Agency (Ajansa Nûçeyan a Firatê, ANF) reported.

The ESU called on the Syriac (Aramean-Chaldean-Assyrian) people in Turkey and diaspora to support the DEM party’s candidates in the elections.

The ESU stressed that the government of the Justice and Development Party (Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi, AKP), Nationalist Movement Party (Milliyetçi Hareket Partisi, MHP) and other affiliated parties are based on a racist, religious and statist policy rather than representing the peoples and workers.

“Since the foundation of the Republic, peoples and progressive libertarian movements have been prevented from representing their will through heavy pressure. Conspiracy and discrimination are practiced in all areas of life and in all institutions of the state.,” ESU added.

The ESU also mentioned how the election results have always been interfered with through fraud and dirty tricks, indicating that during the last May elections, the two parties in power managed to manipulate the election results in line with their interests.

The ESU also pointed to the 1999 elections and the prevailing violations against activists.

The ESU declared that the peoples are struggling to live in freedom, equality and peace, adding that struggle creates hope, strength and possible representation for those peoples.

“Struggle of the peoples of Beth Nahrin (Mesopotamia) and Anatolia for autonomous governance will surely succeed one day, and the mentality of war, occupation and oppression will end,” the ESU stated.

“We fully support the DEM Party, with the aim of stopping the violations and ensuring that cities and all settlements are governed by representatives elected by the people,” the ESU concluded.
