Syriac villages in Tur Abdin elect new mayors in Turkish municipal elections
MEDYAD, Turkey — On Sunday, Turkish citizens participated in Municipal Elections across the country, resulting in the election of new mayors for several Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) villages in the historic Tur Abdin region and Medyad (Midyat).
Aziz Aslan Mutu, a Syriac citizen who returned from Europe, emerged as the new mayor for the village of Hrobtho (Kharabe-Mishka). This marks the first transition of mayorship from Muslims to Syriacs in Hrobtho (Kharabe-Mishka) in 38 years.
In addition, Israel Demir was elected as mayor for Kafro village, Saeed Aydin for Badibeh village, Malke Akbaba for Sidari village, and Bilan Anton for Mar Bobo village.
Meanwhile, the incumbent Syriac mayors retained their positions in the villages of Arkah, Baqisyouneh, Hah, Bsorino, Sara, and Miden.
However, Syriac citizens were unsuccessful in winning the mayorship in the villages of Iwardo (Ayn Ward) and Anhil.
Two Syriacs, Yusuf Türker from the Democratic Party (Demokrat Parti, DP) and Marta Aktash from the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (Halkların Eşitlik ve Demokrasi Partisi, DEM), were elected as members of the Midyat Municipal Council.
