Russia denounces Israeli air strike on Iranian Consulate building in Daramsuq, UN Security Council convenes emergency session

NEW YORK — Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, Russia condemned Israel’s air strike on the Iranian consulate in Daramsuq (Damascus) during a UN Security Council session, emphasizing the need to avoid further conflict. The United States, although not condemning the strike, denied any involvement.

The Israeli air strike claimed 13 lives, including a high-ranking member of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Mohammad Reza Zahedi. In its comments, Russia called the strike unacceptable, warning of its potential to fuel regional conflict. Russian Ambassador to the UN Vasily Nebenzia emphasized the violation of Syria’s sovereignty during the session.

Echoing Russia’s concerns, Chinese Ambassador Zhang Jun urged Israel to heed international condemnation and refrain from further aggression. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also condemned the attack, emphasizing the peril of escalating tensions in an already unstable region.

Amidst the condemnation, US Deputy Pentagon Spokesperson Sabrina Singh, asserted that Washington played no part in the Israeli strike and had no prior knowledge of it.
