Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem limits holiday celebrations to religious rituals amidst turmoil in Holy Land
JERUSALEM — Amidst the ongoing conflict and strife in the Holy Land, the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem announced a somber adjustment to this year’s holiday celebrations, emphasizing prayer, religious observance, and solidarity with victims of war.
In response to the enduring warfare and atrocities unfolding in Gaza over the past seven months, which have cast a shadow over the ability of Palestinians of all faiths to observe their religious festivities, the Patriarchate has opted to curtail the usual jubilant celebrations. Instead, the focus will be on solemn religious rituals within Jerusalem.
In outlying villages and regions, the delivery of the Holy Light will proceed, devoid of any extraneous ceremonial activities beyond the essential religious rites.
The Patriarchate underscored the gravity of the current situation and the pervasive sorrow gripping the Holy Land, emphasizing the imperative of standing in solidarity with the victims of war. In light of these circumstances, the decision was made to devote ample time to prayer and contemplation, reflecting on the spiritual significance of Holy Week and the Day of Resurrection.
