Syriac Melkite Greek Catholic Saint George’s Church in Holeb reopens after restoration following earthquake
HOLEB, Syria — Following a year-long restoration effort, Syriac Melkite Greek Catholic Saint George’s Church in Holeb (Aleppo), Syria, has reopened its doors, marking a moment of renewal and hope for the community after the devastating earthquake that struck the region.
This year’s celebration of Saint George’s Day holds special significance in Holeb, with Syriac Melkite Greek Melkite Patriarch Youssef al-Absi set to preside over the festivities in honor of the church’s restoration.
Father Fadi Najjar, director of the Al-Enaya Special School adjacent to the church, recounted the challenges faced after the earthquake caused significant damage. Cracks in the church walls, water leakage, and structural damage necessitated immediate restoration efforts. Despite the adversity, the church hall continued to serve as a refuge for displaced individuals, providing shelter and meals.
In addition to the church restoration, Father Najjar highlighted the expansion and refurbishment of the Al-Enaya School facilities. Thanks to support from organizations like the Charitable Basket Association and Aid to the Church in Need, new classrooms, a language laboratory, and recreational spaces were created, enhancing the learning environment for students.
Father Najjar expressed gratitude to Bishop George Masri for his steadfast support throughout the rehabilitation process, underscoring the resilience and unity of the community in rebuilding their cherished institutions.
