Municipal officials of Qabre Hewore, North and East Syria, discuss efforts to quell landfill fires

QABRE HEWORE, North and East Syria — Following a blaze at the landfill in the Qabre Hewore (Qahtaniyah), North and East Syria, which poses a health, environment, and agricultural hazard, SyriacPress interviewed with Nassim Murad, Deputy Co-Chair of the Municipality.

Murad confirmed that the fires, which occurred a week ago, were acts of arson, leading to the release of toxic gases and heavy smoke. In response, the municipality swiftly mobilized resources, forming a committee comprising municipal members and the local fire brigade, along with support from Zalin (Qamishli) Municipality to address the crisis.

Through four days of concerted efforts, including investigations and monitoring, the committee successfully extinguished the flames and deployed bulldozers to excavate and sanitize the landfill, preventing future outbreaks.

Murad emphasized that the municipality promptly notified relevant authorities of the incident’s root causes and urged citizens to report any similar issues, pledging preventive measures to forestall reoccurrence.
