European Syriac Union extends Easter greetings, commends French National Assembly’s recognition of 1915 Sayfo Genocide
BRUSSELS — On the occasion of Easter, according to the eastern calendar, the European Syriac Union (ESU) issued a congratulatory telegram to the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) communities celebrating and Christians worldwide.
“Orthodox Christians worldwide, including our homeland of Beth Nahrin (Mesopotamia) and the diaspora, celebrate the Feast of the Resurrection after 50 days of Lent and Holy Week. The Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ will forever remain a symbol of new life and great hope,” read the ESU telegram. “Amid the ongoing attacks and violations targeting Christian peoples worldwide, especially the Syriac people who face dangers in their historical land, the Feast of the Resurrection brings great joy.”
The ESU added that amidst tensions, crises, and difficulties, Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people in Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon celebrate Easter with joy and pride.
The ESU also touched upon an important development in France during Lent when the French National Assembly officially recognized the 1915 Sayfo Genocide.
“This recognition is an important step to urge the rest of European countries to recognize the Sayfo. We highly appreciate this historic step and express our gratitude to the French officials and people because Sayfo is one of the most crucial issues in the Syriac national struggle,” declared the ESU.
The ESU stated that it would soon celebrate its 20th anniversary in Germany, pledging to complete its work in Europe armed with its heritage of national struggle to bridge the gap between the homeland and the recognition of the Syriac people by all their names.
“We extend our congratulations to the Syriac people and Orthodox Christians worldwide on the Resurrection of the Lord Christ, and we hope that this feast will bring hope, peace, and stability to the whole world,” the ESU concluded.
