Student solidarity encampments for Gaza spread to university campuses around globe

BRUSSELS — In recent days, a burgeoning global student movement has gained momentum, inspired by scenes of pro-Palestinian protests and police clashes at US universities. What started as isolated demonstrations has now evolved into a widespread campaign, with student groups in the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Mexico, and beyond joining in solidarity.

Dubbed “solidarity encampments” by many participants, these gatherings aim to pressure university authorities and policymakers to reassess their positions on Israel’s military actions. The protests come amidst escalating violence in the Gaza Strip and stalled ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas.

The scenes of solidarity and activism are reminiscent of the protest movements of the past, as students across continents unite under a common cause. Their demands range from cutting ties with companies doing business with Israel to ending collaboration agreements with Israeli universities.

In the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Netherlands, and Mexico, where solidarity encampments have sprouted, responses from university administrations and local law enforcement have varied. Some institutions have engaged in dialogue with student leaders, while others have taken a more confrontational approach, leading to clashes similar to those witnessed in the United States.
