TURKEY: New Syriac Orthodox Church opens in Tur Abdin village of Anhil

ANHIL, Turkey — The Barsomo family, Yusuf Ishik family, and other members of the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) community have opened a new Syriac Orthodox church, named Mor Elijiah Church, in the village of Anhil, Turkey, in the historic region of Tur Abdin. The church opening was conducted under the patronage of the Syriac Orthodox Archbishop of Tur Abdin Mor Timotheus Shmuel Aktaş.

Construction of the church began last year, and a special Divine Liturgy was held to commemorate its opening. The service was led by Archbishop Aktaş, with the assistance of priests, deacons, and believers from Tur Abdin villages and the diaspora.

The event was graced by the presence of Syriac MP in Turkish Parliament, George Aslan, former Syriac MP Tuma Çelik, and representatives of various institutions in Turkey.

Following the prayer service, attendees gathered at Mor Kuryakus Church in Anhil to distribute sweets and food, celebrating this significant addition to the community.
