European Syriac Union thanks French MPs for recognizing 1915 Sayfo Genocide

BRUSSELS — The European Syriac Union (ESU) sent a telegram of thanks to French MPs for recognizing the Sayfo Genocide committed by the Ottoman Empire in 1915 against the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people.

The ESU letter was sent to 110 French MPs who significantly contributed to the French government’s recognition of the Sayfo Genocide.

The ESU emphasized that this recognition marks a significant milestone in the history of the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people and the French state, as it sets a precedent for other countries to acknowledge the Sayfo.

“The French government should legislate genocide laws in the country, given its historical support for Christians, especially in the Middle East,” the letter stated.

The ESU highlighted the efforts of the French media in shedding light on minorities and peoples in the Middle East, particularly the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people who have faced severe persecution. The organization also stressed the importance of drawing attention to the massacres committed by the Islamic State (ISIS) against the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people.

“Now is the right time for the Syriac people to obtain their legitimate rights, especially after the numerous massacres they have endured over time,” the ESU concluded, expressing gratitude to the MPs once again, pledging cooperation on common issues, and wishing them success.
