Syriac women institutions visit Syriac mayor in Turkey Türkan Kayır
BETH ZABDAI (AZEKH), Turkey — Members of the Bethnahrin Women’s Union (Huyodo d’Neshe d’Bethnahrin, HNB) and Syriac Women’s Center in Turkey (Süryani Kadın Derneği Üyesi, SÜRKADİM) visited the newly-elected mayor of (Beth Zabdai (Azekh / İdil) Türkan Kayır to congratulate her on assuming her new position.
They discussed the Municipal Elections in Turkey and her triumph, as well as the situation of Syriac (Aramean-Chaldean-Assyrian) people in all regions of the homeland of Beth Nahrin (Mesopotamia).
The situation of Syriac women and how to support and empower them was also highlighted.
The news of Kayır candidacy for the Municipal Elections was the focus of attention of many media outlets, because she is a Syriac expatriate who returned to Turkey to live in Tur Abdin, after 38 years in the diaspora.
Kayır secured an impressive 71.27% of the votes.
Her triumph as a first female mayor signals a significant shift in the political landscape of (Beth Zabdai (Azekh / İdil) in Turkey.
The last Syriac mayor of (Beth Zabdai (Azekh / İdil) was Shukri Tutush who was killed in 80s of the last century.
