European Syriac Union celebrates 20th anniversary in Delmenhorst, Germany

DELMENHORST, Germany — The European Syriac Union (ESU) marked its 20th anniversary with a celebration at the Church of Saint Yohna Dakfone in Delmenhorst, Germany. The event saw the participation of representatives from various political parties and institutions, members of clergy, and the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) community in Germany.

The celebration began with a moment of respect for the first president of the European Syriac Union, the late Mattai Rabo, with his portrait and two candles brought into the church to the accompaniment of patriotic songs.

After a minute of silence in honor of martyrs, a documentary film showcasing the ESU’s past work was presented. Co-Chairs Fehmi Virgili and Manuela Demir emphasized the importance of unity among the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people to secure their future and rights.

Syriac Orthodox Bishop Mor Julius Hanna Aydin of the Diocese of Germany congratulated the ESU and paid tribute to Mattai Rabo. A documentary on the relief efforts by the Syriac Cross Organization for Relief and Development followed, with Rubel Bahho highlighting the aid provided to their ancestral lands.

Priest Samuel Gomush also extended his congratulations to the ESU and urged the community to support their parties and institutions.

The event concluded with a musical performance by Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) singer Sargon Sharro, who delighted the audience with a selection of popular and national songs.
