Syrian Democratic Council condemns Turkish sentences against Kurdish officials, warns of threat to Kobani
NORTH AND EAST SYRIA — Following the Turkish judiciary’s sentencing of more than a hundred Kurdish officials, the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) of North and East Syria has expressed serious concern over Turkish policies targeting Kobani in North and East Syria.
The SDC stated that the Turkish judiciary’s decision is an extended act of revenge against those who supported the Kobani resistance that repelled the Islamic State (ISIS).
“It also reflects Turkey’s ongoing desire to target and occupy Kobani, whose victory thwarted Turkish plans to occupy northern Syria,” the SDC added.
The SDC called on the international community to reject Turkey’s expansionist ambitions, emphasizing that the root problems in the region can only be resolved through dialogue, negotiation, and the promotion of democracy, sharing, and coexistence among the region’s ethnic components.
The sentences, widely condemned by the Democratic Autonomous Administration of the region of North and East Syria (DAARNES), Syriac Union Party (SUP), and international human rights organizations, were issued in response to these politicians’ demands to demonstrate during the ISIS siege of Kobani in October 2014.
