European Syriac Union announces commemorative events to mark 1915 Sayfo Genocide across Europe
BRUSSELS — The European Syriac Union (ESU), known for organizing annual events to commemorate the 1915 Sayfo Genocide, announced its program for this year’s remembrance activities across Europe. These events honor the martyrs of the massacres committed by the Ottoman Empire against the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people and seek to raise awareness and demand recognition of these atrocities.
On 14 June, candles will be lit in multiple cities:
-
- Locarno, Switzerland: The event begins at 21:00 at the Sayfo Memorial in Parco della Tacchi.
- Giessen, Germany: Candles will be lit at 23:00 in front of the Sayfo Memorial in Polheim.
- Hengelo, Netherlands: The Beth Soroyo Center on Antellen Straat 24 will host a candle-lighting at 23:00.
- Örebro, Sweden: Candles will be lit in front of the Sayfo Memorial in the Varberga neighborhood at 23:00.
On 15 June, the ESU has organized a lecture on the Sayfo at the Tur Abdin Club in Mills, Switzerland. This lecture will be delivered by former Syriac MP in Turkey and member of the Bethnahrin National Council (Mawtbo Umthoyo D’Bethnahrin, MUB) Tuma Çelik, and Father Georges Ishk Bar Qasho.
On 16 June, prayers will be held in Baden, Switzerland, followed by a lecture at 15:30 at the Syriac Club in Baden.
The European Syriac Union encourages community members to participate in these activities, light candles, and remember the martyrs of the 1915 Sayfo Genocide.
