European Syriac Union representative in Bebra, Germany Ibrahim Ay announces Sayfo Genocide commemoration events
BEBRA, Germany — On the 109th anniversary of the Sayfo Genocide, committed by the Ottoman Empire against the Syriac (Aramean-Chaldean-Assyrian) peoples and other peoples, representative of the European Syriac Union (ESU) in Bebra, Germany Ibrahim Ay spoke about ESU commemoration events around the world.
“Since its establishment, the Bethnahrin National Council (Mawtbo Umthoyo D’Bethnahrin, MUB) has remained committed to remembering the Sayfo martyrs,” Ay stated, adding that the ESU is to hold a series of commemoration events in the coming days.
Ay declared that on 14 June, candles will be lit in front of memorials in Europe, including Örebro in Sweden, Giessen and Gütersloh in Germany, as well as Locarno in Switzerland.
On 15 June, a lecture will be delivered in Mels, Switzerland by the MUB member Tuma Çelik and Father Jirjis Beth Qasho.
On 16 June, a prayer will be held in Baden, Switzerland, followed by a remembrance event in the afternoon. In addition to another remembrance event in Sontra, Germany on the same day.
In Brussels, Belgium, a conference will be held to remember the Sayfo martyrs and introduce the Sayfo history and consequences.
Ay called on the Syriac people in Europe to attend and participate in all the ESU events or watch them online and light candles at home.
“The aim of these events is to shed light on the Sayfo Genocide and remove the darkness on the history of Syriac people,” Ay concluded.
