Chaldean-Syriac-Assyrian musician Basim Hanna Butros passed away at 90
AUCKLAND, New Zealand — Chaldean-Syriac-Assyrian musician Basim Hanna Butros passed away at 90, in Auckland, New Zealand.
He is one of the most important cello players and one of the founders of the Iraqi Symphony Orchestra.
Butros was born in Baghdad in 1934. He is the son of the late deacon and musician Hanna Butros Shaja Alqoshi, composer of the Iraqi national anthem, “Mawtini” .
He graduated from the Institute of Fine Arts in 1954, Music department.
He was appointed secretary of the Iraqi National Music Committee from 1974 until his retirement in 1992.
He worked as editor-in-chief of several specialized music magazines, including “Al-Qithara,” “Music and Children,” which were issued by the Department of Musical Arts at the Iraqi Ministry of Culture and Information, as well as the magazine of “Arab Music,” which was issued by the Arab Music Society, League of Arab states .
Butros contributed to representing Iraq in international musical forums, including meetings of the International Music Council of the UNESCO and conferences of the Arab Music Society.
