Removal of King Gudea statue from Dhi Qar, Iraq arises discontent

DHI QAR, Iraq — Iraqi activists have condemned the Iraqi authoritie’s removal of the statue of the Sumerian King Gudea from streets of Al-Dawaya in Dhi Qar, after the authorities considered it an idol that must be removed.

The Dhi Qar Antiquities and Heritage Inspectorate expressed its strong dissatisfaction with this step, which targets symbols of thought, art and culture.

The Inspectorate also called on officials to hold the perpetrators accountable and protect the statues and monuments, since they are landmarks of antiquities and history of the country.

Iraqi activists criticized this step, considering that it is not much different from what the Islamic State (ISIS) used to do.

The statue of the Sumerian King Gudea is considered one of the most important monuments in Iraq.

A sculptor from Shatra district designed it and dedicated it to the residents of Al-Dawaya, which was ruled by King Gudea about 4000 years ago.
