Syriac Maronite Patriarch al-Rai urges Lebanese officials to elect president and address national crises

DIMAN, Lebanon — Amid the ongoing presidential vacancy in Lebanon, Syriac Maronite Patriarch Mor Bechara Boutros al-Rai emphasized that had the country’s political leaders heeded the inspirations of the Holy Spirit and recognized the significance of their roles, they would have promptly elected a president.

Presiding over a Mass at the Patriarchal Shrine Church in Diman, Patriarch al-Rai called on representatives to ensure the continuous functioning of Parliament, allowing it to reclaim its legislative duties. He also urged the Council of Ministers to restore its constitutional powers.

He stressed the need for officials to take responsibility for the impoverished Lebanese people, who are deprived of basic rights. He called for the implementation of essential reforms to revive the economy and curb emigration.
