UN envoy calls for urgent repairs to electricity network in North and East Syria amid ongoing crisis
GENEVA — After years of damage to Syria’s electricity network due to the conflict since 2011, Najat Rushdi, the Deputy Special Envoy of the United Nations to Syria, has called for immediate reforms to the electricity infrastructure in North and East Syria following widespread damage caused by Turkish airstrikes. Rushdi urged all concerned parties to prioritize repairing the network to restore power to the Alouk Water Station, which has been closed by occupying Turkish forces since November 2023.
Rushdi emphasized that without additional funding, millions of people in the region will face severe food insecurity and malnutrition. She appealed to Member States to mobilize resources for Al-Hol Refugee Camp to reinstate basic services.
Her statements were made after a meeting with the humanitarian work team in Geneva, where she called on Member States to support the Syria Humanitarian Fund in light of the ongoing tragic situation.
