SDC official Bassam Ishaq discusses US presidential elections and future US foreign policy

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In an interview with Suroyo TV, Bassam Ishaq, a member of the Presidential Council of the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) Mission in Washington, D.C., discussed the upcoming US presidential elections and expectations for the post-election stage.

Ishaq commented on the close competition between the candidates and their popularity. “Currently, it is impossible to predict the winner,” he stated. “These elections are unprecedented in terms of the intensity of competition and accusations between the two parties.”

Regarding potential changes in the US position on global issues, Ishaq noted that Donald Trump had previously claimed he could resolve the Russian invasion of Ukraine within a short period. He added that Trump had attempted to withdraw from North and East Syria in 2019 following a call with Turkish President Erdoğan.

“It is also illogical today to withdraw US troops from Syria, because their main goal is to put pressure on Iran in the Middle East,” Ishaq continued.

He acknowledged that the withdrawal of US forces might be possible in the future, contingent on international consensus. “It is not in the US interest currently to dismantle a country like Syria with its geopolitical position,” he concluded.
