Amnesty International commends Administration of North and East Syria’s general amnesty initiative

NORTH AND EAST SYRIA — Amnesty International has praised the Democratic Autonomous Administration of the Region of North and East Syria (DAARNES) for its decision to issue a general amnesty for all detainees whose hands are not stained with blood before 17 July this year.

The organization also urged DAARNES to extend the amnesty to include detainees who have spent more than five years in prison without charges or trials.

Amnesty International called on the United Nations to coordinate with DAARNES and the US-led International Coalition to conduct an urgent screening process. This process aims to identify individuals who should be investigated and prosecuted for crimes under international law or serious crimes under domestic law.

Recently, DAARNES has released hundreds of detainees held on terrorism charges, with the total number of those expected to be released reaching 1,500 people.
