Iraqi Ministry of Migration postpones IDPs camps closure in Kurdistan Region of Iraq

BAGHDAD / ERBIL — A new committee between Erbil and Baghdad is to be soon formed.

It will hold its 1st meeting in August to assess the situation and pave the way for the return of displaced people in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) to their areas.

Consequently, the closure of camps of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) has been postponed.

Minister of Migration and Displaced Persons, Ivan Jabro, received head of the Representative Office of the Kurdistan Regional Government in Baghdad, Fares Issa and his accompanying delegation, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Baghdad.

They discussed the situation of IDPs in the camps and the need to overcome obstacles facing their return to their areas.

“There are currently about 26,500 displaced families in the camps,” Spokesman of Iraqi Ministry of Migration and Displaced Persons Ali Abbas reported.

In related news, more than 800 IDPs from the Sharya Camp in Nohadra (Duhok) voluntarily returned to their areas of origin in the Shigur (Şengal / Sinjar) in Nineveh Governorate.
