Baghdede celebrates opening of new Syriac Catholic Church

BAGHDEDE, Iraq — In a heartfelt celebration, the Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian community in the Nineveh Plains town of Baghdede (Qaraqosh / Hamdaniya), Iraq, joyfully announced the establishment of a new Syriac Catholic church, dedicated to Mar Ephrem the Syrian. This significant event reaffirms the presence and resilience of the Christian people in their homeland, preserving their faith and continuing their sacred traditions.

Bishop Mar Benedict Younan Hanno, Bishop of the Syriac Catholic Diocese of Mosul, shared the joyous news of the church’s opening. He emphasized that the construction of new churches is essential for stabilizing the Christian population in their native land and reinforcing their religious principles. The new church symbolizes hope, encouraging the youth to stay connected to their roots and heritage.

Bishop Hanno expressed his hope that this new church would bring solace and inspiration to the people of Baghdede, especially following the recent wedding tragedy that brought immense sorrow and despair. He noted that the community is moving forward with the church’s construction with renewed joy and determination.

In his concluding remarks, Bishop Hanno highlighted the Church’s vital role in the religious and faith heritage of the Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian people. He expressed his regret that there had not previously been a church named after Mar Ephrem in Baghdede, making this dedication particularly meaningful.
