Syrian politicians support dialogue between Syrian Democratic Forces and Damascus to end 14-year conflict

NORTH AND EAST SYRIA — Following statements by General Commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Mazloum Abdi expressing readiness for dialogue with Damascus, several Syrian politicians have endorsed this initiative. They believe it could alleviate the prolonged suffering caused by the ongoing 14-year conflict.

Mahmoud al-Afandi, Secretary-General of the Popular Diplomacy Movement in Syria, emphasized the importance of Abdi’s call for dialogue. He remarked, “The Syrian government is open to dialogue but holds several positions, as does the SDF. Both parties must find a mutually satisfactory solution, as it is in Damascus’s interest to engage with the SDF to counter the Turkish threat, which aims to divide the country.”

Anas al-Shami, a former member of the Syrian People’s Assembly, highlighted that the Syrian government has maintained communication with the SDF throughout the war, either directly or through intermediaries. He pointed out that the SDF’s political leadership has not, and will not, declare a coup against Damascus, considering this a positive foundation for any dialogue.
