Amnesty International highlights ongoing suffering of Yezidis on 10th anniversary of Islamic State attack on Shigur (Shengal / Sinjar)
SHIGUR, Iraq — Ahead of the 10th anniversary of the Islamic State (ISIS) attack on Shigur (Şengal/Sinjar) in Nineveh Plains in Iraq, Amnesty International released a report highlighting the continued hardship faced by the Yezidi people.
Lauren Aarons, Amnesty International’s Senior Adviser, stated that the Yezidi community has suffered unimaginable harm at the hands of ISIS. Nearly 10 years after the initial attack, their suffering continues, with thousands still missing.
Aarons called on the governments of the US and the UK to support all initiatives aimed at identifying the missing Yezidis.
The Yezidi House in the Gozarto (Jazira) Canton in North and East Syria revealed last June that it had received 431 people, including 274 women, who had been liberated by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) since ISIS’s elimination in Baghouz in 2019.
