Lebanon files UN complaint against Israeli cyber attacks on civil aviation and communications

NEW YORK / BEIRUT — In response to the dangers posed by Israeli attacks on civil aviation services and the threat they pose to the security and safety of communications networks, devices, applications, and electronic data in vital Lebanese installations, the Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has filed a formal complaint with the UN Security Council. The complaint was also submitted to the UN Secretary-General via Lebanon’s permanent mission in New York, urging member states to condemn Israel’s actions against Lebanon.

Additionally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs instructed its permanent mission in Geneva to lodge a complaint with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), calling on the Union to implement technical measures to halt these attacks and assist Lebanon in safeguarding its communications networks.

The complaints were based on a report from the Lebanese Ministry of Communications, which identified interference originating from northern Israel. This interference has led to a decline in the accuracy of the global positioning system (GPS) in Lebanon, adversely affecting transportation and communication services. The report also noted repeated warnings from a network time protocol (NTP) server, indicating frequent mobile network outages and degradation of service quality.

Lebanon condemned these ongoing Israeli attacks as violations of its sovereignty and threats to the safety of its territory and citizens, characterizing them as a cyber-electronic war. The Lebanese government called on the international community to pressure Israel to cease these disruptive practices, which violate international laws and regulations.
