Syriac Union Party commemorates 10th anniversary of Yezidi Genocide, calls for recognition of Yezidi rights

SHIGUR, Iraq — The 10th anniversary of the Yezidi Genocide in Shigur (Şengal / Sinjar), Iraq, committed by the Islamic State (ISIS), was marked by communities around the region on 3 August.

The genocide resulted in the deaths of thousands of Yezidis, the displacement of hundreds of thousands, and the captivity of thousands of women and girls.

Marking the anniversary, the Syriac Union Party (SUP) issued a statement remembering the victims of this horrific event.

The statement declared that ISIS targeted the Yezidi people and committed heinous crimes against peaceful communities, including extermination, murder, displacement, and the captivity of women, adding to their suffering and perpetuating ethnic and religious cleansing.

The SUP renewed its solidarity with the Yezidi people, supporting their demands for the recognition of their rights to live in safety and dignity alongside other peoples of the region, and advocating for the triumph of democracy and humanity over forces of injustice and tyranny.

The SUP emphasized the importance of fully recognizing the political, economic, social, cultural, and religious rights of the Yezidi people, and called for an end to the negative policies aimed at erasing their existence.
