IRAQ: Conference in Ankawa marks 10th anniversary of Nineveh Plains displacement by Islamic State
ANKAWA, Kurdistan Region of Iraq — On the 10th anniversary of the displacement of the Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian community from Nineveh Plains by the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist organization, the Syriac Heritage Museum in Ankawa, Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), hosted a commemorative conference.
Sponsored by the General Directorate of Syriac Culture and Arts, the event revisited the traumatic period of forced displacement, demographic changes, and the abductions and killings in the Nineveh Plains.
The conference featured a dialogue session where participants, including former Kurdistan Regional Government Minister of Human Rights Muhammad Ihsan and Hammurabi Organization head William Warda, discussed the fate and future of Christians in Iraq a decade after the genocide.
Attendees also viewed a documentary titled “Remaining and Resilient” and an exhibition of paintings and drawings depicting the displacement and suffering of these communities.
