Assyrian Church of the East in Lebanon remembers the 1933 Simile Massacre of Iraq
BEIRUT — On the 91st anniversary of the 1933 Simele Massacre which took place on 7th August 1933 in northern Iraq, the Mor Gorgis Church of the Assyrian Church of the East in Sadd el Baouchriyé, Beirut held an event.
The event was attended by President of the Universal Syriac Union Party (USUP) in Lebanon Ibrahim Mrad and his accompanying delegation.
A wreath was placed on the Martyrs Monument in the name of USUP, in honor and respect for the Simele martyrs.
The event, which began with a prayer for souls of the martyrs, was also attended by mayors, priests and a large crowd of people.
The event included religious and national songs performed by the youth of Mor Gorgis Church.
Wreaths were placed on the Martyrs Monument, amid a march from the church to Martyrs’ Square.
Priest of Mor Gorgis Church Father Gorgis Tuma delivered a speech in which he stressed adhering to homeland even after all the sacrifices and massacres to which Syriac (Aramean-Chaldean-Assyrian) people were subjected to, including the Sayfo Genocide and massacres of Hakkari, Simele, Mosul and Khabur.
Father Gorgis Tuma saluted martyrs of Syriac (Aramean-Chaldean-Assyrian) people, stressing adherence to our nationalism and Christianity because they are the essence of our existence.
