Syriac Union Party marks 11th anniversary of Saeed Malke’s arrest by Syrian regime, vows to uphold his legacy

ZALIN, North and East Syria — In Zalin (Qamishli), North and East Syria, the Syriac Union Party (SUP) commemorated the 11th anniversary of the arrest of Syriac leader Saeed Malke by the Syrian regime with a gathering that included representatives from the Bethnahrin National Council (Mawtbo Umthoyo d’Bethnahrin, MUB), regional political parties, and a diverse group of supporters from all communities.

The event opened with a moment of silence to honor martyrs, followed by a speech from Nazira Goreya, a member of the MUB Presidential Committee. She highlighted Malke’s relentless struggle to fulfill the hopes and aspirations of the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people.



Georgette Barsomo, head of the Syriac Women’s Union (SWU) in Syria, emphasized in a statement to the Syriac Press that Malke is regarded as the founder of important organizations and institutions representing the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people in Syria. Barsomo noted that Malke played a pivotal role in establishing the ideology, principles, and goals of the MUB and was instrumental in reviving the national spirit, heritage, and culture within these communities.

She further explained that Malke laid the foundation for key organizations, such as the Syriac Cultural Association and the Syriac Union Party, contributing significantly to the development of all institutions serving the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people.

Barsomo underscored that commemorating Malke’s arrest is a tribute to the ideas and actions he championed both in Syria and the diaspora. She affirmed that Malke remains a symbol for current generations, women, and youth, as he consistently empowered them to take leading roles in society. Barsomo pledged to uphold the vision, organization, and principles established by Malke, continuing the march towards a free, democratic, and pluralistic society for the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people.

The event concluded with a video presentation on Malke’s life and struggle, followed by a statement from Maria Hanna, a member of the Syriac Union Party Council, reaffirming the commitment to continue the fight to uncover Malke’s fate.
