Turkey sees surge in internal migration as economic pressures drive population shifts

ANKARA — Economic pressures and the pursuit of better living conditions are driving significant internal migration across Turkey, with people of all age groups seeking improved housing and livelihoods. According to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute, Istanbul and Ankara experienced the highest levels of both incoming and outgoing migration last year.

In 2023, approximately 3,450,953 people relocated between provinces in Turkey, marking a 24% increase in internal migration compared to the previous year. Istanbul emerged as the most popular destination, welcoming around 412,770 new residents. However, it also saw a significant exodus, with 581,440 people leaving the city. Meanwhile, Ankara received about 232,700 newcomers, while approximately 208,740 residents departed.

Overall, around 518,016 individuals moved in search of better housing and living conditions, while nearly 512,000 people relocated for educational opportunities.

The rising cost of living in Turkey’s major urban centers has intensified economic pressures, prompting many to seek work, stability, and a better quality of life in other regions.
